Repair and Reposition the Carpet: To repair a carpet or even to lay it down, you can easily do it yourself with a few steps and also save money. Here’s how you can patch up specific areas and what to look out for when laying a completely new carpet.
Repairing or laying carpeting is not difficult if you know the corresponding tips and tricks. Often it is only isolated spots that are contaminated and no longer look beautiful. Then it is not always necessary to relocate the entire carpeting immediately; here, it is enough to replace individual fabric surfaces. We will show you here how you have to proceed in each case, which different adhesive is available for fastening and how to obtain a decorative edge of the carpet.
Mending the carpet
Repair and Reposition the Carpet: Fresh stains on the carpet should not be rubbed, because that distributes the dirt. Instead, the liquid must be blotted immediately with a clean cloth or sponge. In the case of persistent impurities, carpet foam, or an electric cleaning appliance can also help. But if a cigarette burns a hole in the carpet, it is usually nothing other than to renew the site. Besides repositioning the carpet if you want to keep your carpet clean, it is useful if you have a gentle and effective stain remover for carpet at home.
For a pinpoint removal of burn marks, you should punch out the appropriate place with a punch. So that the repaired area in the carpet will not be noticeable later, it is optimal if the carpet patch looks as similar as possible to the original carpet. If you do not find something suitable, you can also cut out a piece under the cupboard and insert it in the appropriate place. If you have cut your patch and punched or cut out the site in the carpet, the cut edges in the carpet must now be cut straight and cleaned. For low pile or needle felt, we recommend especially the “double cut,” For this lay both carpet tracks on top of each other and cut through both layers with one cut. The result: the carpet edges fit together precisely.
Before you use the patch, you should still remove the remains of the carpet adhesive on the floor with a spatula. Finally, the new replacement piece can be tapped with carpet adhesive or double-sided tape and with a rubber hammer in the vacancy. Tip: Make sure that the patches are pointing in the same direction as the carpet. Otherwise, the new area will be darker.
Reposition carpet
If the carpet is very old or simply no longer beautiful, it is worthwhile to lay a completely new carpet.
● · Remove old carpet
With a spatula, carpet strips are usually easy to remove from walls. Push the spatula behind the skirting board and lift it. How easy it is to remove an old carpet depends mainly on the carpet bonding. To do this, you first need to determine how your carpet has been fixed. If it is adhesive tape, they can already be removed with a little solvent. In the case of water-soluble glue, the entire carpet area should be moistened with water and allowed to act for about one to two hours. After that, it can be easily removed by hand. Occasionally, the carpet was also heavily glued. Then usually only working with a stripper helps. You can borrow the mechanical device from a hardware store. Thanks to the blade on the front of the machine, very stubborn glue can be removed from the floor.
● · Soil preparation
If there are still adhesive and carpet residues on the floor, they must first be obliterated with the spatula. Otherwise, mold is threatening under the new carpet. Original porous floors with a primer: with resin solvent, Epodes resin or a dispersion primer. Very dense surfaces such as chipboard, stoneware or magnesia screed prepare with a neoprene coating. Unevenness can be eliminated with a leveling compound.
● · Step-by-step instructions: laying carpeting
Repair and Reposition the Carpet: The first step is to measure the whole room and then purchase a new carpet. If this is cut to size, it can be spread on the floor. Make sure that the flooring is so broad that it sticks to the walls a bit. It is best to leave the carpet for a few hours to rest.
After that, the supernatant is cut to about 10 centimeters and folded back the carpet half-sided. If the floor covering should be glued to the floor over the whole area, glue is suitable for toweling. Choose the most suitable for you from these four types of adhesives:
Distribute the adhesive over the entire area with the toothed spatula in bows. And only as much as you can handle until the glue dries. Then press the floor covering from the middle to the wall onto the floor. Avoid bulges or bumps.
An alternative to the adhesives mentioned is the double-sided adhesive tape. This can be used if you want to take the rug with you in case of a change of your apartment or if you need to remove the carpet on an excerpt. Place the tape along the edges of the rug. With a large carpet area, the adhesive tape should also be glued crosswise in the area. Then pull off the protective paper on top, put on the carpet and press it. Again, you should avoid wave formation as much as possible.
